Vision & Mission Statement

ECOSYSTEM DEPARTMENT

  • Objectives
    • To coordinate the issuance and implementation of policy, strategy and regulatory frameworks and instruments towards sustainable management of all ecosystem resources in the country
    • To educate and empower communities whose livelihood depends on ecosystem resources regarding conservation, wise use and good of ecosystem governance.
    • To design and provide awareness raising programs at all levels including to the general public, policy and decision makers, local governments, NGOs/CSOs, School Environmental Clubs, etc.
    • To foster partnership among all actors and coordinate the various efforts done by these actors towards ecosystem resource conservation and enhancement.
  • Mission
    • Ensure the healthy functioning, productivity and sustainable use of the aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems of the country.
  • Major Activities Among others, the following activities are accomplished in the department towards enhancement, conservation and wise use of ecosystem resources:
    • Formulate standards, guidelines and monitoring mechanisms for the sustainable use and management of the country's ecosystems;
    • Promote community based and ecosystem approach for improved livelihood and environmental protection;
    • Provide relevant information for policy makers about the status of the different ecosystems in the country;
    • Promote the awareness of the public at all levels on the importance of sustainable use and management the ecosystems.
    • To review the Environmental Impact Statements of major development undertakings from ecosystem management perspective;
    • Serve as a Focal Point for the enforcement of the UNCCD in Ethiopia and represent the Government at the international forum.
    • Provide technical assistance to regional states;
    • Upon request provide advisory services on ecosystem management;
    • Advise decision makers at all levels;
    • Conduct brief ecosystems/ecological studies to acquire updated information to formulating or amending ecosystem management and monitoring & evaluation strategies, policies and guidelines;
    • Conducts short-term trainings to field staff on ecosystem management and monitoring mechanisms;
    • Collect information available in different organizations and collate and avail for all users with recommendations;
    • Identify, evaluate and disseminate technologies and best practices existing nationally and internationally regarding ecosystem resource enhancement and wise use.
