Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation

Reduction of Emission from Deforestation and Forest Degradation (REDD)is a global initiative that was emanated from an attempt to recognize the role of forests in climate change mitigation. Countries participating in the REDD-Readiness Mechanism will prepare a Readiness Plan (R-Plan). The R-Plan essentially provides a roadmap toward achieving REDD Readiness, indicating how these activities will be undertaken (i.e., the approach or methods), what resources are needed and who would provide them.

Ethiopia has been selected to participate on the REDD-Readiness Mechanism together with 36 other African, Latin American and Asian Countries. As a result, the Environmental Protection Authority has received a financial support from the World Bank for implementing a project entitled “Forest Carbon Partnership Facility Readiness Fund Grant “with the objective of formulating REDD-Readiness Plan for Ethiopia.
