The Environmental Protection Authority of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia is the National Focal Point for GEF in Ethiopia. Started its membership of the GEF and to its resources in 1991. Up to the end of GEF 4 (June 2010), sixteen GEF projects were approved for Ethiopia amounting to $45,686,925 USD and a co-financing of $320,731,167USD. The GEF-5 Programme has commenced on July 1, 2010 and its System forTransparent Allocation of Resources (STAR) is in place for 3 focal areas. Accordingly, the following is the indicative STAR allocation for Ethiopia in the three indicated GEF Focal Areas:

For the remaining major focal areas (international waters, the ozone layer, and persistent organic pollutants), countries can access the resources from the common pool based on the excellence of their proposals.
The GEF serves as the financial mechanism of the following conventions:
• Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD)
• United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC)
• Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs)
• UN Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD).
• The GEF, although not linked formally to the Montreal Protocol on Substances That Deplete the Ozone Layer (MP), supports the implementation of the Protocol in countries with economies in transition.
